He got sidetracked from this route by an article by Carlo Petrini (the founder of the Slow Food movement) which lamented the fact that nobody made ice cream like they used to. This inspired him to set up a gelateria in Turin with his friend Federico Grom. Grom was a huge success, largely thanks to Guido and Federico’s insistence on only using the finest ingredients. They sold Grom in 2015 and decided it was finally time to turn their hands to winemaking, returning to Guido’s family estate in Costigliole d’Asti and founding Mura Mura. As with Grom, they quickly established a reputation for their wines, and people as diverse as Gaia Gaja, Paolo De Marchi and Gabriele Gorelli suggested we look at them.

The name ‘Mura Mura’ translates as ‘enjoy life slowly’ and the philosophy is in line with that of Grom: quality derived from the finest raw materials. In addition to the 10 hectares of sustainably managed, estate vineyards in Costigliole d’Asti, they own 3.5 hectares of prime vineyards in the Barbaresco crus of ‘Roncaglie’, ‘Starderi’, ‘Currà’ and ‘Serragrilli’ and 1.5 hectares in the ‘Sorano’ cru of Serralunga d’Alba.

Winemaking is minimalist and geared towards enhancing the expression of sense of place. Guido ferments with indigenous yeasts and ages the wines in a combination of large format French oak and ceramic amphorae so as not to overwhelm the pristine fruit.

The ‘Beatrice’ Timorasso, aged for 15 months with regular bâtonnage, marries flavours of zesty citrus fruit with subtle floral notes and has a wonderful texture on the palate. The ‘Mercuzio’, made from the estate’s younger Nebbiolo vines, is fresh and approachable with a core of vibrant red fruit. The ‘Garibaldi’ Grignolino is the best example we’ve tasted in over 40 years of searching. Grignolino is a rare indigenous grape, native of the Monferrato hills. Wines made from this elusive variety can be too light, but the ‘Garibaldi’, made from a tiny, 0.7-hectare plot on sandy soil on the Costigliole d’Asti estate, combines beautiful aromatics with a surprising depth and structure.

The ‘Iago’ is an excellent introduction to the Mura Mura Barbaresco stable. A ‘village’ equivalent, it blends fruit from the ‘Currà’, ‘Starderi’ and ‘Serragrilli’ crus. The single-vineyard Barbarescos are a step up. ‘Starderi’, from a 0.5-hectare plot on clay-limestone marls, is elegant and floral with fine-grained tannins. ‘Roncaglie’ is a hidden gem of a Barbaresco cru, perhaps because it is relatively small (13 hectares in total), perhaps because over half of it is owned by one producer (Poderi Colla). The Mura Mura ‘Roncaglie’, from a 0.38-hectare vineyard of low-yielding, 65-year-old vines is a seriously impressive wine, marrying the power and intensity of old vines grown in this prime cru with a remarkable elegance from Guido’s gentle hand in the winery.

This is an exciting and dynamic estate that in a short space of time has made quite a splash in of the world’s greatest wine regions. Watch this space – they are a star of today and a superstar of tomorrow.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0628/1812/3999/files/XX_9b476551-2f44-4257-b88f-edeedf3e721c.jpg?v=1790634665
