Originally founded in 1975 by Chantal Lescure and Xavier Machard de Gramont, Domaine Chantal Lescure was purchased in 2023 by Eric Rousseau (of Domaine Armand Rousseau) and local entrepreneur Jean-Philippe Girard. Based in Nuits-St-Georges, the domaine has 19 hectares of vines across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, all of which have been certified organic since 2006. It was these sustainability credentials and the calibre of vineyards that first attracted Eric and Jean-Philippe. They have since hired Fabrice Groussin, formerly winemaker at Domaine Changarnier in Monthélie, as their cellar master. Fabrice is renowned for his meticulous attention to detail and has significant experience in organic viticulture. Together, the trio are dedicated to turning Domaine Chantal Lescure into a leading Burgundy estate.
The domaine’s vineyards in the Côte de Beaune include a 4.3-hectare monopole, ‘Le Clos des Topes Bizot’, to the north of Beaune. Situated at 420 metres above sea level, the site is planted with both 55–65-year-old Pinot Noir and 25-year-old Chardonnay on stony, clay and limestone soils. The ‘Le Clos des Topes Bizot’ Blanc hails from 1.3 hectares within the monopole and undergoes fermentation with indigenous yeasts before ageing in French oak barrels for 13 months, 18% of which are new. The resulting wine displays layers of ripe stone fruit laced with fresh acidity and a long finish. ‘Le Clos des Topes Bizot’ Rouge is produced from the remaining three hectares. The grapes are fully destemmed and fermented in stainless steel, with indigenous yeast, before undergoing similar ageing in barrel for 13 months, of which 19% is new oak. Characterised by bright notes of red cherry and light spice, the finished wine has a firm structure balanced by expressive fruit on the palate.
The Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru ‘les Suchots’ hails from a 0.42-hectare parcel of 15–50-year-old vines planted on alluvial, limestone soils. Bordering the ‘Richebourg’ and ‘Romanée Saint-Vivant’ Grand Crus to the west, and ‘Échezeaux’ Grand Cru to the east, this 1er Cru is enviably located and produces powerful wines built for ageing. Fully destemmed and aged in French oak, of which 13% is new, it is opulent and structured with a core of ripe blackberry and cherry fruit and a hint of coffee and spice on the finish.
