Monterustico is an exciting Dogliani project from the Vaira family. They purchased the estate in 2015 with the aim of revitalising and protecting the terraced vineyards and indigenous grape varieties of this historic denomination. Situated in the southern Langhe hills, about 16 kilometres south of Barolo, Dogliani was once more sought-after than Barolo, famed for its outstanding Dolcetto. However, the steep vineyards here, on clay-marl ‘Formazioni di Lequio’ soils, have recently faced widespread abandonment.
The estate is located just outside of Farigliano, a small village in the heart of the appellation, halfway between Dogliani and Clavesana. Proximity to the river Tanaro, cool Alpine winds, and elevation of between 350 to 530 metres create a unique microclimate, allowing for a gentle ripening of the grapes and delicate aromas to develop.
The Langhe Bianco is an ode to the historic field blends of the region and combines Arneis and Favorita with fruit from old bush-vine vineyards planted with indigenous Piemontese varieties Nascetta, Manzoni Bianco, Rossese Bianco, Bian Ver and Baratuciat. Unoaked, it is crisp and refreshing, bursting with orchard and citrus fruit aromas complemented by subtle fennel and chamomile nuances.
The Dogliani is a generous, intense expression of Dolcetto. After 18-20 days of maceration on the skins with a partially submerged cap, the wine is kept in stainless steel and is unoaked. It is fresh and elegant, with a vibrant aromatic profile underpinned by velvety tannins and a juicy finish
