Nestled in the heart of Montalcino, Pieve Santa Restituta comprises 27 hectares of vines planted 350 metres above sea level, neighbouring Fossacolle and Case Basse. The estate was purchased by Angelo Gaja in 1994, marking his first foray into winemaking outside his native Langhe. It took Angelo a while to achieve the quality level he consistently achieves with his Piemontese wines, but today the Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello di Montalcino’s rank among the region's finest.
As in the Langhe, Angelo has moved to a long post-fermentation maceration, around 30 days, and ageing in a mix of barrique and larger botti. Of the two single-vineyard wines, the ‘Sugarille’ epitomises the power and intensity that gives Brunello di Montalcino its enduring appeal. At the same time, the ‘Rennina’ is more elegant, restrained and, arguably, Piemontese.
